Freezing Falls (via solarnu)
Had an interesting moment yesterday; I found out a guy who works in my office just happened to be going to Ithaca for the weekend. He’s never been (I think it’s for a master class or a concert or somesuchthing).
In five minutes I had to quickly give him a run-down on what to expect: He’s taking the Short Line, so it’ll be a fairly long, cold walk to the Commons (where I think they’re staying). The wind will be pretty wicked (but not as bad as if they were on the hills). I picked a restaurant or two to suggest — he likes Vegetarian, so Moosewood was a no-brainer. But what else? Joes is gone (right?). State Street is my favorite, but not everyone digs the Bo Burger. Maxine’s (though I’ve never been)? So, naturally, I also suggested DP Dough for late-night drunken snacking.
The strange part was — I think it’s the first time I’ve ever had to suggest Ithaca “To Do’s” to a complete stranger of the area. I could have told him to hit up Moonshadows — delicious Black Forest and darts — but, it probably wouldn’t seem as wonderful to him as it does to us. It would probably look like any other dive to him. Plus, it’s winter — I couldn’t really suggest the Farmer’s Market, or the Falls. He won’t have a car, so I couldn’t suggest driving out to the wineries and hitting the Pines for a burger.
So, I’m curious, friends — if you had to whip up a quick list of suggestions to an Ithaca virgin (in the middle of January) what would you say? What did I miss?
Also, it makes me want to go back. Even in January.
