Interesting look at how, overnight, a fake MLK Jr. quote:
“I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy…
…was born and spread across the entire internet, all thanks to Facebook (and Twitter, natch).
It’s mostly been reposted ad infinitum in combination with an actual MLK quote — namely, his “darkness/light” quotation, which is most known for appearing in his well-known “Where Do We Go From Here” (8/16/1967) speech in Atlanta:
“I’m concerned about a better world. I’m concerned about justice; I’m concerned about brotherhood; I’m concerned about truth. And when one is concerned about that, he can never advocate violence. For through violence you may murder a murderer, but you can’t murder murder. Through violence you may murder a liar, but you can’t establish truth. Through violence you may murder a hater, but you can’t murder hate through violence. Darkness cannot put out darkness; only light can do that.”
It also appears in his 1957 book Strength To Love, and, like any good preacher, was a theme that he used in sermons before.
The internet works in fast, crazy ways. Here, it would seem that someone posted their own quote on facebook, followed by MLK’s quote — and when it was reposted by others, they omitted the quotation marks around King’s words.
