Johnny Appleseed

Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros

Song For The Moment

“Johnny Appleseed” by Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros

I’ve been sick for the better part of the past two weeks.  Between that and caring for a little one, who is also sick, the spirits can get run down.  My quick pick-me-up in those exhausted times?  This tune, filled with inspirado from Mr. Strummer.

If you need a pick-me-up in these hectic holiday-days, be sure to give it a spin.

Darkness On The Edge Of Town - Bruce Springsteen

Darkness On The Edge Of Town

Bruce Springsteen

Song For The Moment

“Darkness on the Edge of Town” by Bruce Springsteen

When I was up the other night at 3-ish AM, feeding the babe, I turned on the telly and had the good fortune of discovering a new documentary airing on HBO about the making of Bruce’s big follow-up album after the success of “Born To Run”.  It’s interesting for a lot of reasons — seeing the footage of him and the band in the studio, some 30-odd years ago, and knowing what lies ahead for them; being inside the creative process, from start to finish; and just being able to spend ninety minutes basking in the glow of some fantastic music.  ”Darkness” has always been one of my favorite albums of his — this only added more weight to that fact.

Do yourself a favor and set your DVR.  It’s well worth checking out.

Song For The Moment

Tatooine by Jeremy Messersmith

Sometimes, when you are up at 4:26am, feeding a wee baby, you need a little slice of quiet beauty to enjoy in the dark.

Gorgeous and adorable.

Song For The Moment

“Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full Of Promise” by The Avett Brothers

Today’s song comes in video form — courtesy of some amazing animation (all done on one painting that he changed over 2,600 times) by artist Jason Mitcham.  A perfect pairing for a lovely song.

Also, the tune works well with Hurricanes.  Happy Friday, everyone.

The man has pipes.  This tune of his makes my Friday just a bit brighter.  It is my hope that it will do the same for you and yours.

Song For The Moment

“Strawberry Swing” by Coldplay (a crazy-yet-serene unofficial video)

First, the video: There is so much that I find alluring in it.  The animation itself — so clean, so smooth, with the only the occasional fingerprint to remind you of how it was made.  The sheer unexpected weirdness of their “moment” together — and yet, this sweet sense of intimacy throughout all that surreality still resonates with me.  Their expressions — not changing, save for that one final moment where their faces linger together… Couple all that with some relatable themes: the unique duality of subway travel (isolated in our own worlds yet sharing one small intimate space), the ideal unknown soul mate, the timeless concept of two ships passing in the night — and you’ve got yourself a winning combination.

Next, the song: I’ve never actually heard this one before — though from what I read now, it was popular.  And though it’s not very cool to like Coldplay these days (save for Frants), I still have a spot in my heart for that first album and what it meant to me: driving alone, dropping off scripts on “Ed”, while NYC slumbered around me.  A time in my life I will always look fondly upon.

This is all to say that I like the song and I like the video and the two together put a big ol’ smile upon my face.

Arcade Fire

Song For The Moment

“Rococo” by Arcade Fire

Their new album, The Suburbs, is out (and available for only $3.99 on Amazon today!). The trappings found in most of the tunes are familiar Arcade Fire territory — swelling orchestral bits, bleak-yet-inspirational lyrics, and thundering epic crescendos that make even the most cynical of us want to take our neighbor’s arm and face the future together.  Loud-quiet-loud, at it’s prettiest.

EDIT: Also, I almost forgot that tomorrow, their MSG performance, directed by Terry Gilliam, will be shown live on YouTube.
